I want dreads but I never had them before and I was wondering how do I get them and how long does my hair have to be for at least short dreads. Basicly how do I get dreads.

Don’t believe what everyone says
I’m a white girl and I’ve had dreads for two years now. They’re awesome, I wash them, they don’t smell, and they’re beautiful…

You’ve got a lot of questions about dreads, so read up before you get them. These sites will tell you EVERYTHING about dreads:

Get someone to twist your hair and keep them maintained. Get them retwisted when it starts looking sloppy Eventually your hair will "dred" and lock together. How long it takes depends on your hair, and how well you keep it maintained.

i think "classic" dreads are from not washing your hair. though, i had a friend with long hair who gave himself dreads using elmers glue. they lasted around a week and were apparently, less then simple to wash out.

they are gross, they come from not washing or combing your hair. They smell bad, are unsanitary and imply you are a pot head.

I have had dreads for 2.5 years; they are now down to my waist and I am taking them out (yes you can take them out even after 2 years).

To start them, I separated my dry hair into sections about as big around as a pencil (uneven roots look better). I then took a ratting comb, held the strand snuggly and back-combed the hair from the roots to the ends. This will produce a large tangle. Spray the dread with water and twist the tangle from the roots to the ends vigourously between your palms (twisting downward as you go); do this every time you wash your hair until they lock (tighten) up. I had thick straight hair. Using this method, I ended up with 64 nice tight dreads. It took about 6 weeks for them to look tight and not have that velcro consistency.

Note that your hair will dread from 1/2-2/3 the original length of the hair. For example, I cut my dreads to 6.5 inches long before I took them out. When I got the dreads out, the hair was 10.5 inches long. So, you can assume that if your hair is 6 inches long to start with, that it will be about 4" long when done dreading. Really, it shouldn’t be any less than 4" in length when you start.

For the entire 2.5 years I had dreads, I used a daily clarifying shampoo like Suave (99 cents) and no conditioner. I also put red dyed highlights in my dreads on a monthly basis (again, using no conditioner). I only washed them twice a week and let them dry natually. When I took them out, they were clean inside (I never used wax); I had nice healthy hair, do damage and no split ends. :)

    Good luck!!!
