Tutorial on how to dread hair from start to finish using only a crochet needle and a comb. The smaller the needle the better, my favorite is the .7 mm. Start my sectioning off the hair, this should probably be done carefully in rows like cornrow style. tart with one section about 1 to 2 inches in diameter, sectioning the hair in circles or squares. Then pin the rest of the hair out of the way using bobby pins and small ponytails. Tease the hair towards the base, then begin to use the needle. The needle should poke into or through the base of the teased hair so that the hook of the needle pulls little loops out. This is done while the other hands index and thumb is pinching the section being poked. Twist the hair being pinched and keep poking the needle in making loops. Focus on making the dread lock look even unless lumps are intended. This style was learned in Bangkok Thailand.

If you maintain the …
If you maintain the dread too much and strip the loc, loose hairs will start to fall out. These are broken sections of hair. If you see these, you’re working your dreads too hard. If not you are probably ok. Just make sure to curve that hook when exiting.
Every few days is ok at first so long as you are maintaining each loc evenly. Eventually your locs will start to stabalize and need less maintenance.
so maintaining too …
so maintaining too much will mess up me dreadlocks? can i snd u a pic teach 2 show u mine. they look good tho…im kinda worried cuz i already finished and i maintain some every other day..am i doin it 2 much?
There is only …
There is only benifits to this method if done correctly. If doing the crochet hook sloppy or noncaring there are some bad things that can happen:
1) When pulling the hook out curve it out so it does not strip the hair. The loc can break if the loc gets stripped too much.
2) Tighting too much at the base can irritate the scalp. Be softer towards the base. The hook method is great. it speeds up the knotting process that naturally happens when backcombing, it controls how the loc looks & how thick
Great video, thanks …
Great video, thanks so much! In the long run, do you know if you sacrifice anything by this method that you might otherwise get using traditional backcombing methods? (e.g. 10 years from now how will the end results compare?)
I just saw a person …
I just saw a person, with about the same hair length, getting their locs done all at once. They took about 6 hours of straight dread locking with only a crochet hook to finish.
how long do this …
how long do this process take?
I agree, when we …
I agree, when we first started, they were smaller. After half way he said that he wanted them larger, so I improvised. Now I suggest braiding the hair into the sections and in a pattern they want first then locing each braid one at a time.
Excellent technique …
Excellent technique, but why are you making the dreads so big? Why not smaller, separate the hair evenly and dread it. Just my opinion… I

This it is a good form to make the dreadlocks, but I can’t finish them.
Can someone help me?
Either works. …
Either works. Usually pushing through the loc will help to grab those loose hairs. Stopping in the middle helps to tighten the loc. If you go at an angle, it can make the locs thicker.
for locs patience …
for locs patience is always needed, whatever the technique you use. It will take a lot of time before locs mature.
And overdoing is always bad, wether it is with the crochet hook, beeswax, palmrolling, clockwise rubbing, latch hook, interlocking, … don’t overdo any of these, have patience and over time your locs will look great.
the crochet hook will works to help restore locs.
still, every person has his/her own style, choose the one you feel best with. And enjoy your locs
peace
yayakills, you …
yayakills, you clearly don’t know what your talking about. this is the surest, fastest and best technique to make the most beautiful looking dreads in all kinds of hair, wether straight or not.
Skillteacher may not have the whole technique perfectly under control but he def’tly knows what he’s talking about. Try it and you’ll see!
yo ive just had …
yo ive just had dread locks for about 3 weeks now and they need sortin out .. wen u use the needle do you push it right threw the dreadlock or just to the middle??
You can talk to …
You can talk to some salons but they will probably be of no help. Your best bet is to ask some of your friends or relatives if they will learn the technique with you and to help you do it. It does take a long time, so friends or relatives that you spend time with regulary can regulary help you maintatain your locs. If that doesn’t work then a more uncertain option is to go to a local community collage or local grunge club to see if you can pay a hippy or grunge person to learn the style and help

This method will …
This method will help to knot your hair so when you swim less knots will come out. Note: any time you get your locs wet it will increase the unlocking process. It just means you will need more maintenance. Using the crochet hook is a corrective process that helps you to sculpt your locs to the way you want them. When things happen like getting your hair wet, getting something out of your locs, or just over time hairs start to pop out; this method will help you to make your locs look nice again.
