What Are Dreadlocks? How Do They Work?

October 29, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

(i know what they look like Im just curious about the hairstyle) How is it done? How do people with dreads wash their hair? Is it true that dreadlocks make hair grow faster? Im not trying to be rude, i just want to be informed…thanks! =)

I have them myself, so I will share :)

They’re just knots of hair, lots and lots of knots. Because they’re JUST knots of hair, that means I wash them just like you wash your hair (I hope) As often as I want, just work soap in and rinse it out. They’re a lot of work, and there are a lot of rumors started about them that just aren’t true. I haven’t heard about hair growing faster with dreads, it probably happens slower. I’ve heard that they grow in a spiral around the main wad of knots. If you want your hair to grow faster, eat protein and get excercise. Take vitamins.

If I had to have one complaint about my head, it would be that while my dreads stay clean, they’re damaged. They’re done by grabbing some hair, holding them tight at the tip and backcombing. That makes them start to rip and knot up and all kindsa good stuff. If you don’t wash them for like 2 days, they’ll become dry and can break pretty easily. That’s why wax is used. It’s like a natural conditioner for dreads.

I hope I cleared it all up for you.

Anyone who knows something about dreadlocks?

October 26, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

I’m gonna do them myself,
You know,
Just rolling my hair, getting it knotty like that.
Absolutely no wax.

But with dreadlocks, could I still shampoo my hair with normal shampoo?

And does anyone have any other advice for taking care of/making dreadlocks just in general?

Thanks!
God bless:)

back comb your hair! and twist from the route in the opposite direction of growing

Do you find white guys who wear dreadlocks sexy?

October 26, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

Is that some sort of style that some white guys are doing, where they have blonde bleached hair and have it made into dreadlocks?

no. and not because i’m against dreadlocks, but usually when i’ve seen them on white guys they (the locks themselves) don’t look well-maintained. they look accidental. dreadlocks look best when they’ve been started on naturally tightly-curled hair. straight hair doesn’t translate well into dreadlocks.

How can I get dreadlocks by back combing?

October 22, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

I have fairly straight and thick hair, and I want to make it into dreadlocks. As far as I understand, I have the option of spending $250 on a perm of some sort, or I can backcomb it and twist it all up and get it all gunky. I prefer the second option if it is at all effective and easy to do without screwing up. Does anyone have any tips, advice, or explanation on how to do it, exactly?

Thanks!

Thick hair is good.. it will help your hair lock faster.
Now, I’ve only had dreads for a few months and I did them myself (backcombing)… I can tell you right now, get some help with this project. Cause it’s gonna take awhile… especially if you have long hair; my dreads are 20 inches long and it took at least 10 hours.
You need a dread comb or a flea comb from a pet store, a ruler, rubber bands, and wax is optional… but if you do decide to get wax I would suggest Dreadhead because it isn’t petroleum based like most waxes. Those are bad and will get stuck in your dreads, then get all moldy and smelly. Then you can say bye bye to your pretty dreads.
The comb is what you’ll use for backcombing (obviously). The ruler is so you can measure and section your future dreadies. The rubber bands to tie them off.. though I wouldn’t recommend putting any up on the roots of your dreads. It’s a huge pain in the neck and not really necessary. Some people also say to keep rubber bands on for up to 2 months. Not really a good idea; I don’t know about other people, but having rubber bands on kept my tips from locking with the rest of my dreads.
Now, wax.. a lot of people hate it. I think as long as you stay away from petroleum based waxes you’ll be okay. And I don’t know how long your hair is, but I use a lot less than suggested. And I try not to use it too often either. No gunky-ness if you only use a tiny bit and wash it out really well when you shower. Palm-rolling is the answer.
You also need a residue free shampoo so nothing builds up in your dreads. Dreadhead also sells that. Another tip is wearing nylon stockings over your head the first few washes. It will help to keep your dreads tight. Just wash your dreads through the stocking.. it sounds weird, but it works.

This site will tell you everything you need to know on backcombing.. and any other tips or tricks. And their products are awesome.

can you make dreadlocks out of clip in extensions?

October 19, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

i want single dreads.. only a few though.. are they expensive? and can i buy seperate clip in extensions and make dreads out of them? :/ help?

i wouldn’t make dreadlocks out of extensions that could be hard to manage in the long run but you could do it. You can do it with your normal hair though it does require a lot of maintenance and can cause damage. Try it with the extension by itself it wont kill anyone.

How do i make yarn dreadlocks?

October 16, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

I have natural hair and i want to try dreads but i want them to be long.

I want to do something like this:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn249/BITCHimME-09/calientemay9009.jpg

but i need to know the method of how to start it. do i start with braiding the yarn in?
how many rolls of yarn would i need?
what type of yarn is best for me to use?
and how do i secure the ends?

Please serious inquiries only.

I’ve seen some girls do thins at craftster.org not something I’ve ever done. I would assume you don’t use wool because if you’ve ever washed a animal fiber sweater, it felts and mattes. But I would do a few searches before you attempt it. Good luck.

Try Madradhair.livejournal.com too.

Anyone know any good barber shops in or near Glendale, California that make good dreadlocks?

October 10, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

I live in Glendale, California, which is near Hollywood, does anyone one know a good place that would make dreads, it would be better if it was cheaper, i dont want those chemically dread making products for like 2000 dollars.

You don’t need a salon. Check the link in my source. It will point you to some people that know all about dreading. I wanted to dread my hair once, but I couldn’t stand the long hair. Now I have a mohawk.

Happy dreading!

Dreadlocks? Making them and should I?

October 04, 2009 By: admin Category: dreadlocks products

I’m almost 14 years old im a guy. Ive grown out my hair in the past year and ive doin alot better with girls iono if its cus of the hair or somtin else. Anyways i was thinking of getting dreads, cus its my style and lifestyle but im hoping its not TOO derastic. If i do get ‘em i also wanted the easiest most natural way. Ive alredy started the neglect/naturaly way but if this takes up to 2 yrs i was wonderin of ways i could speed it up. By the way im white and ive got pretty dark blonde hair. Send an e-mail to timaz92@hotmail.com if u want a pic.
I have already done a lot of research on it. Dreads are clean and if u dont no anything about dreads dont answer cus u probably have no idea what ur talking about.
dreads arnt even african.

dreads are cool, do whatever you want to your hair. But dont let your hair, etc decide who you are. Be kind, be strong & be wise. Thats cool.
