Dread Locks and straight hair?

October 26, 2009 By: admin Category: dread locks hair care

I am a male with somewhat straight hair. when it gets long a few random curls start, but for the most part it is pretty straight. First of all how long should my hair be before i start the process of dreadlocks? All the websites suggest 3 inches and my hair was about 5 at my last measure. Second, how much shorter will my hair appear after the dreadlcks are started? I heard that they would barely be an inch long and just stick off the edge of my head. Finally, what products should i consider buying for my hair before and during the process.
If you just want to tell me how nasty you think dreads are keep it to yourself and find something better to do.

I’m a chick with straight caucasian hair. It was about 5 inches long when I dreaded it. Surprisingly, I didnt lose much of my length but that could perhaps be due to giving myself thin dreads (a little wider than a pencil). They are certainly longer than one inch and do not stick out except after wash time. You lose more length when you dread curly hair.

What you need to get for dreads. If you are doing themself you will need a metal lice comb. There are some good ones out there with two rows of teeth and they work pretty well. You will also need a non-residue shampoo. Knottyboy and dreadheadhq are the more popular choice. Some ppl use Dr Bronners too but this is actually not residue-free but for some reason still works good on dreads. Always wash your hair the day before you start backcombing. It really helps in the process as it gets all the residue out of your hair and strips the oil out of your hair too.

Optional items you may need include Lock Peppa (This really good powder you put on your hair to really help it dread up), wax (you dont really need it, if you do a little further research you will discover it is a lifelong debate in the dread community), hair rubberbands that you can put on your roots and tips which are really good for your hair type. You leave them on for a couple of months until your dreads start to knot by themselves. I have bands on my roots, none on my tips.

How do you dread hair? And keep it clean?

October 22, 2009 By: admin Category: dread locks hair care

I love the way dread locks look. But how do you clean them? I have a son who has curly/ wavy hair, what is the best way to dread this texture of hair? How do you start with short hair and how do you form them with hair that is already long?

the best thing to do is go to a hairdresser which specialises in afro hair/hairstyles. it can be done at home but you’ll have to buy a few things beforehand – very strong-hold hairspray and beeswax.

* split the hair into small sections.
* backcomb and twist the sections one by one quite roughly so it starts to take shape.
* give it a spray with the hairspray.
* backcomb it a bit more.
* when you’ve finished, put beeswax on each dred and make sure you put an adequate amount to keep it together.

after at least 2 moths, go to the hairdressers coz you’ll have to undo them to clean them properly. they will also put the stray hairs back in the dreds, along with the extra length that has grown.
be very careful in the first few months not to get the dreds wet since they can become loose quite easily.
don’t forget to spray them twice a week, and put wax on them once a week.

p.s. don’t listen to anyone who says they look dirty/nasty or whatever, if you look after them properly and care for them they will look fantastic.

what is the easiest way to get dread locks and nots in your hair out, the least hurtful?

October 22, 2009 By: admin Category: dread locks hair care

I have had really bad hair problems! Help ME!!

Well, the easiest and least painful would be to cut it really short.

Otherwise, try wetting your hair, and using spray-in conditioner. Let sit for a few minutes, then work out with a large-tooth comb, starting with the bottom of the hair and working your way up to the scalp.

Good luck!

how can make my short hair dread lock i have my hair about 3 inch?

October 19, 2009 By: admin Category: dread locks hair care

hi people i have my hair about 3 inch how can i have it dreadlock ? some says that rubbing and rolling an leave it but is it really helpful?….is dreadlock possible without use of any indegrants???????please reply me

You should start growing your hair into an afro, then start getting the afro braided. Take the braids down every week or 2 to shampoo and deep condition it and get the braids redone. After your fro is about 4-5 inches long, you can start getting it twisted with beeswax and you’ll have to stop washing it for a while so it can start to lock up. Depending on the texture of your hair, it can take anywhere from 2-6 months to lock.
